A Special Release Pokémon Card Seeks to Curb the Influence On Speculators
To celebrate the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique collaboration has been formed. Pokémon's creators alongside the Natural History Museum will launch a pop-up shop stocked with special merchandise. Fans can look forward to offerings including plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all inspired by the institution's aesthetic. For collectors, however, will be a limited-edition Pikachu card, offered as a gift with purchase for the pop-up. The store will operate from on-site at the museum and its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.
Pokécology That Inspires the Partnership
Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a highly anticipated tome packed with stunning illustrations depicting creatures in their natural habitats. It's essentially is what an in-world scientist might publish after trainers provide field notes, alternatively a naturalist's journal might have created if the famous islands were populated by Pidgeys rather than finches. Part of the charm lies in the book's scholarly approach, treating Pokémon as a legitimate subject for inquiry. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and artist Chihiro Kinoshita each possess PhDs in ecology and behavioral science.
Why This Promo Card Stand Out
It is common to issue special edition promos for major tournaments or brand collaborations. Many such promotional cards typically highlight the iconic mouse Pokémon who serves as the franchise mascot. The factor setting this new museum card is its distinctly bigger dimensions. Although exact measurements were not publicly disclosed, its distribution is guaranteed to be highly restricted, with fans limited to only a single card with each transaction.
Limiting Speculator Activity
According to a company announcement, a portion of the merchandise may also be available beyond the institution itself. But, broader availability will only be select retailers in the United Kingdom. Importantly, collectors will not be able to purchase this promo via the official web shop. Although reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they will have a difficult time stockpiling large numbers this time around. If you're unable to attend, there is an alternative like Pokémon Fossil exhibit coming to Chicago later this year.
"All profits of sales from the Museum shop and from its online store, including Pokémon products, support the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. This includes the research of hundreds of researchers dedicated to scientific inquiry to discover answers to the global ecological crisis," it says.
