Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
