In a highly critical evaluation, the defence committee stated that the UK is "far from" where it needs to be to adequately defend itself and its allies, especially during a period when military risks to Europe are "substantial".

The examination found that the UK is falling short of its Nato obligations and dropping "well under" of its stated leadership position.

The document was published as the defence ministry designated potential sites for half a dozen new munitions factories, being part of a broader strategy to increase domestic defence production.
