Car Evading Police Crashes into Tampa Nightspot, Leaving Four Deceased and Eleven Injured
A speeding car while fleeing police crashed into a crowded bar early on the weekend, claiming the lives of 4 people and injuring 11 in a historic neighborhood of Tampa, known for its nightlife and tourists.
An air surveillance unit with the local police department observed the car driving dangerously on a freeway at approximately 12.40am after police said the silver sedan had been seen street racing in a different neighborhood, as per a law enforcement statement.
The state road police intercepted the car and tried to perform a tactic that entails bumping a back panel of a fleeing vehicle to cause it to lose control, known as a pit, but it was ineffective.
State police personnel “disengaged” as the vehicle sped toward the historic Ybor City area near the city center, local police reported. Eventually, the motorist lost control of the car and struck over a dozen people near the bar, police confirmed.
Three victims died at the location and a fourth person died at a hospital. By Saturday morning, a fifth casualty was admitted in serious state, and eight other patients were being cared for at local medical centers but were classified as not critical, authorities said. 2 other victims experienced minor injuries and declined treatment at the scene. Every one of the 15 victims are grown individuals.
“What happened this morning was a pointless tragedy, our hearts are with the loved ones of the deceased and everyone who were affected,” the local police chief expressed in a message.
Officers identified the alleged driver as 22-year the individual, who was booked on the weekend and is being held at the local detention facility.
Legal records showed the suspect has been accused with 4 charges of vehicular homicide and four charges of serious evading arrest with severe harm or fatality. All are serious crimes. Legal representation was listed for the accused.
“Our entire city feels this loss,” said the city’s mayor, previously served as the city’s initial woman top cop, in a message on online platforms.
“My thoughts are with everyone affected. Official inquiries into this crash is continuing, and we are working to obtain explanations,” she wrote.
In recent years, some states and municipal authorities have advocated to limit the employment of high-speed car chases to protect both civilians and police. Following a increase in deaths, a recent report supported by the US justice department recommended law enforcement pursuits to be rarely used, explaining that the danger to suspects, officers and bystanders often exceeds the immediate requirement to take someone into custody.
Still, the state has intensified efforts on the methods, with the state’s road police revising its guidelines to relax restrictions on the application of vehicle pursuits and pit maneuvers. The federally supported report described these strategies as “high-risk” and “controversial”.
