The first new treatments for gonorrhoea in many years are being viewed as a "major milestone" in the battle against drug-resistant strains of the pathogen, according to scientists.

A Global Challenge

Cases of gonorrhoea are increasing around the world, with figures suggesting more than 82 million infections each year. Particularly high rates are seen in the African continent and countries within the World Health Organization's designated area, which includes China and Mongolia to New Zealand. Across England, cases have reached a all-time high, while rates across Europe in 2023 were significantly elevated compared to the rates from 2014.

Public health authorities are increasingly worried about the rise in drug-resistant strains. The WHO has classified it as a "priority pathogen". A tracking program revealed that resistance to key first-line drugs like ceftriaxone and cefixime increased dramatically between 2022 and 2024.

A Pair of Novel Drugs Receive Clearance

One new antibiotic, alternatively called Nuzolvence, was authorized by the US FDA in recent days for treating gonorrhoea. This infection can lead to significant complications, including the inability to conceive. Researchers believe that targeted use of this new drug will help delay the emergence of superbugs.

Gepotidacin, developed by the pharmaceutical company GSK, also received approval in close succession. This treatment, which is also used to treat urinary tract infections, was proven in research to be successful in treating superbug versions of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

An Innovative Partnership

This new treatment stemmed from a innovative non-profit model for drug creation. The charitable organization GARDP collaborated with the drug firm Innoviva to see it through.

Research Study Outcomes and Global Access

Based on data released by a prominent scientific publication, the new drug eradicated more than 90% of genital gonorrhoea infections. This establishes an equal footing with the current standard treatment, which involves a dual-drug approach. The trial included over 900 participants from several countries including the United States, Thailand, South Africa, and European nations.

Under the terms of its unique model, the non-profit has the ability to register and commercialise the drug in many developing nations.
