New Year's Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snow Predicted Throughout the UK
Meteorologists are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Go Ahead In Spite of Alerts
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the weather service.
Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies
Across the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. The mercury are due to be cold, making additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

- Delays and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.
The Mercury Set to Drop Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Warnings Activated
Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities stated this indicated the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is absolutely key.
