Cameron Norrie earned the most important victory of his career by rallying from a set down to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had previously defeated Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win signifies Norrie's initial win over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Huge. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who joins as the fifth UK male player in history to beat a global number one. "Coming back from a physical setback last year, I fell in the initial match of qualies here. I just tried to enjoy my performance in the latter part of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the most significant victory of my career, my maiden triumph over the global number one and probably the most in-form athlete in the sport right now."

The British player, positioned No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine finals in a row and 17 successive premier event wins, which represented the top run of results in the Spaniard's developing professional path.

Alcaraz seemed to be moving confidently towards victory at the start as he eased through the opening set.
