Prison Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars

He fought the legal system and justice triumphed.

Sixty days subsequent to being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last appears jail-bound.

Anticipated Jailing

The found-guilty instigator – who has been living under residential detention in his estate while a series of court processes and petitions play out – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the coming days, amid increasing rumors that he will be moved to a notorious maximum security facility.

Past Statements on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the far-right ex- military man displayed minimal sympathy for the country's inmates.

“What’s the need to give these lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be fucked, period. That's my opinion.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to end up in prison, you simply need is not rape, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Destination Speculation

However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, four of whom this week inspected the facility in an obvious bid to dissuade the high court from banishing him there.

Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, said he expected the septuagenarian leader to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute gut problems – the outcome of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 presidential campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He will not be able to cope if they move him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” he added, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells accommodating forty prisoners: “It's virtually one square meter per prisoner.

“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, naturally, of the awful cuisine,” remarked the senator.

Backers Speak Out

Lucas is not the sole person speaking out prior to the one-time head of state's anticipated imprisonment.

Authoring in a leading newspaper, a different supporter, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the largest unfairness in its past”.

“It represents an wrong that eats away the spirits of millions people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Popular Reaction

That may be accurate considering the considerable backing Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. But his predicted incarceration has also pleased the spirits of numerous individuals who feel he should be imprisoned for planning to block his successor from taking power – and even plotting to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the sitting administration's allied group, stated: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to get dignified handling – but dignified treatment while incarcerated. He cannot continue being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years praising the tough conditions of prisoners, had abruptly become aware to their entitlements. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has consistently asserted that basic rights were not for criminals – chosen to visit a jail to find out what circumstances are really like,” he stated.

“He is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, demeaning handling”.

Possible Incarceration Conditions

Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently houses about 14,000 detainees, his probable destination appears to be a close jail for law enforcement and other “unique” inmates called Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are far more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although still a distant from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while living in the stunning presidential palace, around 12 miles away.

According to reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – roughly the size of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 sq metre bathroom with a bathing area and a 130 square foot balcony. “He could be permitted to have a television and additionally a cooler in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” sources suggested.

Political Comments

Senator Lucas denounced the talked-about proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the presiding magistrate who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his fate in the {
