A confidential source has disclosed a parliamentary probe that the UK failed to secure classified equipment permitting the Taliban to locate local individuals who collaborated with allied troops.

Data Breach Endangers Numerous at Risk

The source, known as Person A, stated that people concerned by the security lapse were advised to change residences and alter their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

Members of Parliament are currently examining the UK government's response of a catastrophic leak of confidential data concerning nearly 19,000 individuals who had asked to come to the UK to flee the regime.

Data Disclosure Occurred

A data file with their personal data, comprising identities, phone numbers and in some cases relative details, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.

The leak became known months later, when details of several individuals who had applied to relocate to the UK were posted on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban lack comparable resources that we have,” she told lawmakers.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Should they obtain mobile details, they can trace your exact position. That is what specialized teams achieved.”

During testimony about whether the Taliban had access to necessary encryption, the whistleblower stated: “They possess all resources.”

Aftermath of the Data Breach

Early investigations presented to the inquiry indicated that approximately fifty relatives and associates of people concerned by the incident had been murdered.

A gag order about the breach was enacted in August 2023 and blocked any information about it from media reporting until recently.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the aid group she was working with advised individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been breached”.

“Our suggestion was that they change residence if they could and altered their contact details. That constituted the crucial data that, if authorities acquired such data, would result in their location being found,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A contested that government assessment conducted by a former official had been wrong to determine that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The crucial point is that these Afghans are not confronting militant forces; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

The source explained disturbing violence suffered by at-risk Afghans, comprising electrocution, simulated drowning, and physical abuse.

“We have had young kids who have had limbs fractured to try to get the family to say where someone is,” she testified.
