The star has handed over the full amount of his £25k award cash to the MVT, which works to save the Britain's independent music venues.

Fender was given the prize on 16 October as his new release his work was chosen as the best record of the past year.

He has chosen to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages played in his initial steps.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing my current career if it weren't for all the shows I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," said the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, major artists like the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

Sam Fender also took part, raising more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to assist thirty-eight local spots across the UK.

The donation supported venues that were dealing with possible closure due to issues stemming from floods, fires and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Some locations received financial assistance in upgrading amenities and gear that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The concept that funds from shows in big venues supports the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.

He is far from the only musician to contribute his award winnings to charitable organizations.

When they received the prize in 1996 for their album the album, frontman the singer declared that the group would donate their prize money to the non-profit the charity.

In 2002, musician the artist divided her prize across multiple organizations, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also contributed a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked updated gear," she told a publication.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective gave their winnings to the community center that supported their group, alongside other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients M People gave their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the disease.

"Winning was quite enough," said singer Small. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the bonus, because we had the cake. So our success affected the lives of others."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had protected a couple of grassroots venues in south-east England, by placing them under community ownership.

The Joiners in that area and the other in the city were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "shares" in the venues.
