The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Instance in 25 Years.
Following 25 long years, every region of the state is facing dryness. This landmark event follows difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that worsened wildfire risks and challenged its huge agribusiness.
A Chart Indicates Zero Drought
Thursday's report from the national drought tracker confirmed that all of California is without dry or drought conditions. This shift resulted from weeks of heavy precipitation that helped fill key lakes like the state's largest lakes far beyond their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a climate scientist.
Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons
Achieving this status involved powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, causing extensive inundation, power outages, and deaths. Although that weather helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.
As late as late December, regions like northeastern California were still classified as unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.
The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge
But, experts warn that the end of drought status should not be confused with complete water security. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation show it at only about 70% of the typical level.
This snowpack, which provides approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for long-term water security. Hydrology managers point out that it is too early to draw conclusions for the months ahead.
“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to improve by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”
Even as the official status shows a clean slate, attention turns to maintaining this precious water balance during the rest of the year.
