This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: happy, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Each year, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked the pig's pardon.
